INDONESIA
The company will embark on a major return tour to Indonesia from mid-June to early July, 2011. With generous support of a travel grant from the Asian Cultural Council, the company will travel to 5 cities-- two in Bali, and 3 in Java-- where they will teach, perform and collaborate with local artists and organizations and perform at the huge SIPA Festival seen by 10,000 people in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java. Janis has been waiting for more than 8 years to see and work with the many artists she and the company collaborated with in 3 trips, in 2001 and '02. The invitations to return to the country initially came from friends and faculty at the prestigious ISI Yogyakarta ("the Juilliard of Java", as Janis calls it). This time, they will once again incorporate local Javanese student dancers into one of their works, Lost, Found, Lost, for performances at ISI and then travel together to the SIPA Festival. In Bali, JB&D will conduct a workshop in Ubud with the world-renown Cudamani Gamelan Dance and Music group, and teach and perform in Singapadu at GEOKS Arts Center. They will complete the trip in Jakarta, with a workshop and Lecture-Performance with IKJ (Institut Kesenian Jakarta). See Current Events for full schedule of events/dates. Thanks also to the American - Indonesian Cultural and Educational Foundation for their last-minute support.
JB&D is one of the only dance companies in the US that has had the honor of this kind of on-going, cross-cultural exchange with Indonesia. To help support this tour and our work, please go to our page at Fractured Atlas to donate! www.fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/profile?id=3707
